Barry yesterday evening I was walking up the road and thought I could see an aircraft with its landing lights on. It’s still there so I now realise it is Venus. No wonder you thought it was a torch.

Several decades ago I used to drive down the A1 at night returning to camp after a weekend at home. There was always this bright light in the sky almost due west at a bit above eye level. I subsequently found out it was Venus. Almost a micro-moon.

Flying back across the pond one night time also a few decades ago, the co-pliot (likely bored out if his brains supervising the autopilot) asked me what I thought the lights ahead were - very low on our horizon. I thought other aircraft or ground lights, but he said they were stars and so low in our vision due to the curvature of the earth from 40,000 ft.

When you climb another 20000 ft up to 60000 ft the curvature of the earth is quite amazing site indeed.

Worth a browse of the Flat Earth Society's website, especially their forum, if you're bored and looking for some light entertainment! :D

TBH, I'd not give them the web traffic. The sooner their silly ideas go away, the better for us all.
