It sometimes pays to contact your original supplier and tell them your changing - unless! Often pays dividends - nobody wants to lose customers to the opposition.

That goes for other service companies like car and house insurance

I avoid auto-renewal and when the next quote comes in (invariably very close to the renewal date to preclude you looking around) I tell them I have had a better offer from someone else and they ask who - er that’s my business not yours - and usually they roll over and offer a much better renewal quote.

Insurance and service providers are the modern highway men - barely legal thieves..

I had a renewal quote from my car insurance company (after a major not my fault car accident that wrote off a £39 000 car :( ). I had expected it to go up some due to their website saying even if you have a protected no-claims discount (which I do) then the premium may increase. After getting their quote by email I went on a comparison site (I hate them!) and found that the same company offered me a saving of over £100 on the original quote. When I phoned them up they tried to say that it must have had a different set of options but I quoted from the screen the options I had chosen and they were identical to the original quote (I made sure before I phoned them as I expected that point to be made.) After a few minutes of them keying in something on their system the call centre operative said they would match the web exclusive quote. I did feel like saying, no I have a better offer (which I had) but felt some loyalty as their process for the accident claim had been very efficient. I don't know that the unheard of other insurance companies would have matched their service so I accepted their web exclusive offer over the phone.

Further complications did arise, but that will take us too far off topic. The crux of the story is 'you get what you pay for, make sure you'll get the service you need.'

So what should we expect to pay monthly for phone and broad band? I thought I was doing well as we have a minimum phone use, regular sibling long distance calls Sundays, and broadband at £45.00 average per month. That is with Plusnet. House and car insurance due next month with Churchill. Time to look around maybe? SWMBO is very good at detecting phone scams.

I handle the BB only because I need the speed to get my enormous motor racing fix, SWITWTO (she who is told what to do) :lol: does all house and car insurance etc etc while I watch my racing :D

I hardly ever change anything. Been with the same insurance and broadband since before Pontius was a pilot.

Seeing as we have widened the thread to insurance providers (think that might have been me :D ) just to report that today my credit card account has been credited with £50 for the two cars I had insured with Admiral in April. This is part of a £110M package of refunds that Admiral is voluntarily making as they predict they will save that much on fewer payouts during the CV19 crisis as people are using their cars less during this time. The surprising upshot is that I decided not to renew with them when they ended on 29th April and insured our cars with Churchill and Saga saving £150 by doing so at the time - so a pleasant win-win for us.

Regarding Broadband I have been threatening to leave BT for many more years than I care to remember just to reduce my bills, but each time I speak to them at contract end time they offer me a deal that makes me stay with them. The thing with BT is that it just works consistently well. My current package gives me 70+Mbs on a FTTC connection with some BT Sport thrown in for which I pay £27pm not including landline. I pay seperately and annually for that on their line-saver scheme which adds another £10pm. Now I know there are cheaper deals out there but you hear such horror stories of dreadful customer service with companies like Talk Talk for instance that piece of mind is sometimes worth a few bob extra.

Just going back to car insurance, a few years back I had my car with Sheilas Wheels. As the year was nearly up I did my usual price comparison and found they were offering a much cheaper deal than their renewal fee. So I didnt call them, I just cancelled the old one and took out the new one which was supposedly for new customers but I got it no problem.

I know a lot of peeps cant be bothered changing insurance and utility suppliers but I can safely say I have saved £1000s over the years by spending a few hours every year - what else can you do when retired El Oh El :mrgreen:

We should have a special section for Insurance and Broadband and call it Satellite because the same old thing goes around and around and around...........................

I'm on a similar deal but despite being in a small village BT have laid out FTTH to the pole outside our house and I now get 150Mbs for around £25. I have an 18-mponth contract, and every renewal time BT come with a discount that means I stay with them. How do you only pay £10 pm for line rental saver? My last renewal was for £219.84 which is just over £18 pm. Basically the saver gives you 12 months for the price of 11.
