I have found both with Code 75 & 100, if the coupler heads are in line with the height gauge, the pin may touch the front of the plate but 95% of the time, sit on top.
I never compare one coupler height against another vehicle unless the height gauge is hiding. ( so that is why I have two of them)

You say "the actual coupler is spot on with its opposite number (coach end)" but is it spot on with the height gauge? I always test them against the height gauge not each other.

I'll check them all out against the height gauge - I don't have that many so it shouldn't take long. Thanks for all the advice. Barry

The Kadee pliers arrived and do the job. I have also left the height gauge on my programming track. So I can easily check the couplers are correct along with the pin. In all cases so far adjusted, the couplers are spot on, but the pin either hits the low platform or goes under it. The pliers obviously rectify this problem. BB

There are metal and insulated versions of the height gauge, so it depends which one he has ..

I'll have another look, but I thought it was plastic - certainly not metal.

Mine, via Rails of Sheffield last month, is cast metal - and comes with a very clear warning in the instructions regarding shorts. When I was looking for it online I didn’t notice the search throwing up anything different, hence my original post.

Mine is also on my programming track with a couple of slits cut in the rails.

They advertise an insulated version. Cheaper than the metal one. Unfortunately the 0 gauge version is almost 3 times the price.

It is insulated - it says so on the packet! To be honest I just opened the packet and stuck it on the track - I didn't take in its "official" name, and I don't recall when I bought from Hattons there was any other type. Makes sense that it's insulated - makes you wonder with most model railways being electric, why you would make it from a conducting material?
