Thanks for all the input.

I looked at the Locomotec site and they have a unit with indexing, which moves the TT in preset segments. Has anyone tried this unit?

I can only say that I am completely satisfied with my Fleischmann 6652, which works perfectly after having been stored in the attic for 15 years. Admittedly not cheap but can be found second-hand at reasonable prices.
