Wow, those shots look good, as does the layout. Mine’s still at the bare board stage! We need a long, cold winter, so that I can spend plenty of time on the hobby. Right now, I’m dealing with builders as my small extension slowly, very slowly, takes shape. :(

If it were me I'd probably go the subway route but building a completed tunnel section below base board level complete with passengers and lighting. But that's just me I guess ;)
Most people are shocked when they find out how bad I am as an electrician

I might have a go at chopping the bottom of the subway steps off and fudging the entrance with black painted card. It all seems to simple in my mind, but I know damned well that it won't be! Cutting a couple of holes in the baseboard is possible, I suppose, and will have the benefit of keeping the platform in place. It's days like today that I wish that I hadn't got back into this hobby. All I want to do is play with my trains!
If you do cut the bottom off the subway steps, you could maybe fit a small mirror at the end to reflect the steps and give the illusion of depth. I've seen small mirrors used to great effect in going nowhere tunnels and buildings.

What a good idea. I couldn’t see down the subway on my platforms because they were sideways on.
