What did you use for the cobbles. It looks very "rustic"

Thanks gentleman for your replies.I have been following all of your great work which makes your comments that much more appreciative.Sorry I have not acknowledged sooner but life gets in the way occasionally.I currently have 5 trains on the go, so yes it looks busy.Lots of movement.There is the possibility to run 2 more units at the same time which I feel is a bit of a novelty for a dc layout.On the lookout for a couple of suitable locos.Then it will be a task of getting the courage to weather all of my stock. Watching Steve M" loco weathering posts" with great interest. I would encourage all members to post images on this forum as Im sure like me ,we all like looking at the vast range of styles and techniques that make our hobby so interesting.It can be a bit daunting putting our personal efforts into a public domain for the first time for sure.Thanks for the continued support.Has anyone ever thought that the Metcalfe models look a bit under scale? I purchased the Sand house kit and after assembly placed it in the chosen space on my layout only to then find myself rescuing the packaging from the rubbish bin to check if had bought the oo scale kit as it looked like N scale.It must be 20yrs since I last made one of their Kits and I must say they have improved but just look underscale.Any one else had this impression?

Hi Peter.I use modelling clay.cobblestones ,roads,retaining walls and also cover some of my buildings with the stuff.I enjoy using it.Das is one brand but there are cheaper products out there just as good.Cheers

I think Metcalfe kits are fine. The loco sheds for instance are a perfect size. Perhaps the sand house buildings are smaller in real life than you imagine.

Judging by the finish on the layout I don’t think you will have much trouble when it comes to your stock.
If, as I am, you are new to weathering try to do plenty of reading first and practice lots.
I started on a few goods wagons yesterday - that’s another new one for me.

Ive been playing around with different sizes of chimney.Three times the size actually.Getting it to rise above nearby structures and has helped,It doesn't look as lost in amongst them..It was seeing your Metcalfe buildings your layout and subsequent posts about them that convinced me to try them.

I recently built a freebie cottage from Metcalfe. I then built a timber yard from scratch which, even though I scaled carefully ended up looking too big against the cottage. Other models however seem okay and they all go together really well. On the subject of cobbles, I stood my timber yard on cobbles using Chris Nevard's biro end method. I made the cobbles by smearing a card base with a smooth Polyfilla/PVA mix. I had to take care but the final appearance is I think quite good - and the PVA gives a good degree of flexibility.

This is my attempt to add some detail into a micro scene Inspired by fellow member SteveM.I don't think it is up to his high standard but wanted to show how the forum works for me in being inspired by ideas and modelling methods . enjoyed putting it together.Thanks for the idea.
