I have just renewed my membership and got the Club 10% discount on the cost. Is this normal - I have renewed a little early following the reminder email from Hornby.

I have to say the little Hornby 0-4-0's are my first choice when it comes to finding a donor loco to convert into narrow gauge as they tick all boxes as far as I am concerned.

The way I thought of the free loco (Though I have not joined myself) was that one buys a loco one gets club membership for free.

Actually I wonder if that would work for Hornby? If they give free membership to people who spend over a certain amount on their products? Years ago they used to give a free "Pugh & Co." wagon sith every loco purchased. It took me about a year to save to buy my loco back then and I did get my free wagon. Was in 1979 or 1980 I believe.

No more free loco's MG - you now have to pay £17.99 - if you want it?

Do you mean you have a Hornby 0-4-0 loco for sale or do you mean the price of the membership?

UK membership is £30. No free loco (which is a good thing imho). But, as I have said before, the 10% online discount is back which has already saved me over £100 on price fixed preorders.

If you want what was free with you Club membership last year (0-4-0 loco), you now have to pay additionally for it. As Steve said "the 10% discount for Club Members is worth the membership fee".

But is it really? Several retailers eg Bure Valley Railways (no personal connection) regularly offer large discounts, often much more than 10%. Always shop around for best deal.

Sorry. I maybe on crossed wires here.

You are referring to buying an 0-4-0 loco from Hornby with the 10% club discount costs £17.99 if one has paid out £30 for club membership first?

Hi MG - The Club no longer gives a loco for free when you join/renew your membership. However the same little 0-4-0 is available to Club members for £17.99 - I would assume you would get your 10% club discount on this amount. I renewed my Club membership yesterday, by using the link on the Hornby site and got 10% discount on my membership fee - so £27.00 instead of £30.00. I did check with Hornby this morning and this is all in order.
As others have said the 10% is worth having, and don't forget orders over £50 you get free postage. I placed some orders the other day and saved almost £70 using the Club discount. I've sent you a PM. BB

Agreed that many retailers match the discount, although Hornby do now stipulate a period of time after the initial launch during which they cannot apply a discount. To do so would risk that retailer losing its Tier 1 status for stock supply.

The thing you don’t get with other retailers is a price promise on pre orders. At least Hornby honour the price when the preorder as placed. For example, I have the SS Black 5 on preorder (RRP £250). With the club discount, I will pay £225 as and when it is released. It is reasonable to assume there may be a price rise or two before then so I fully expect the RRP at release to be in excess of £275. The preorder price could then be 20% or more below RRP.

I’ll take that any day of the week (providing I can convince the memsahib to let me :D ).
