As I have said before there quite a number of variations in these and maybe there is no official terminology used to describe them.

This is the former LMS goods shed in Bingley West Yorkshire, I believe it was for wool only. As you can see there is an overall canopy over the ground level loading bay and two fully enclosed hoist shafts. There was a similar but larger shed one station South at Frizinghall

When I was young I had a job in a warehouse in the city of London near St Pauls which had one on 5 of 6 floors and we called them a hoist bays. There was a safety door on the inside. If that is what the proper name was I have no idea, but we called them that. There was no roofs on our ones. Would have though if there was a roof they would be called roofs.

Thanks for the further replies and the photos. I like the term ‘hoist bay’ - seems quite an obvious name for them.
