If you can aford it I would go for 0 gauge. Expensive but gives a WOW factor. Though I model in the narrow gauge of 0, I do find the larger scale easier to make things in. Easier to paint etc (Though it depends how much detail you want to add).
I like the chunky feel to my models in 0-16.5 which I can quietly hear buffers clashing.... It just gives it a feel of presence. I don't have the funds to model in 0 gauge myself, but the narrow gauge version I am having fun with as I can aford that.

Just an update, we have now moved in. its been a long hard wait have decided to go with OO gauge and have longer runs and more "going on" so too speak. Need to get the workshop set up over summer and then start the baseboard autumn/ winter, have finalised a plan but unable to post as its 100Mb and I cannot get it reduced enough, I had this problem before, but cannot remember the solution. Stay safe, perhaps we all have a bit more time at the moment, there are worse place's to self isolate than your railway room Here in France it's even worse, we cannot leave the house without documents, and its only for chemist's or a food shop basically. Ff
