I made one with a surplus decoder (too big for the loco) and a blue LED. Programmed the chip with an old motor across the orange and grey wires with a Firefox flicker. Used an NCE controller to program it as an accessrie coder and removed the motor. Worked well

Late to the conversation as usual !
I was looking for similar and this old thread popped up on web search.
I have been experimenting and have made a reasonable(ish) arc welder with a bright clear led and a flickering led connected in series with a limiting resistor to run at 9 volts.
The flickering led came from a old pound shop electric tea light candle. Searching the Xmas stock to see if I have any more old lights , it’s all stored under the baseboard so maybe add red and blue to the mix.

Mine is a flashing blue with a steady red in circuit.
