I’m making a start on my 9F to try some different techniques. As usual the glazing and smokebox plates are covered by masking fluid.
The Crosti 9F often developed rust alongside the smokebox door so I’m trying something new. The ‘rust’ has been painted on and I intend to use hairspray as a chipping medium. The paper mask is to prevent the rest of the model getting covered in the hairspray prior to a waft of weathered black.
That will then get rubbed off with a moist paintbrush once the paint has dried.

The whole loco has had a mist of weathered black but a heavier coat on the rust patches which had previously sprayed with hairspray. After drying a moist paintbrush reveals the smokebox rust effect I was after.

Good job Steve. I cut the steps off the bogie and attached them behind the buffer beam. Looks much better.

That looks good - it's amazing the uses hairspray has!

Only a small amount of work on the 9F today (memsahib demanded a garden centre visit!). The pipework was picked out in a mix of burnt brass and copper then toned down with a mist of weathered black and a black wash.
I have put a bit of black wash streaking on the main body but it’s not showing up too well, maybe some dark grey will help.

Very impressive Steve.

Steve - I don’t know much about steam locos but the effects look really good and what I think I would expect to see on a well work steam loco.

Thanks RIchard, I try to find photos of real locos - the Crosti has a mix of grime taken from three different examples. Some of the pics are in the background.
The rust and lime scale on these is very obvious.
