Painting and Weathering Service
Re: Painting and Weathering Service
Found even more parts to take off the Duchess this morning and ordered the transfers etc.
Still planning the sequence for masking and painting as this is a fairly complex project.
But in the name of all that is holy, can someone explain how I pulled back muscle removing the smoke deflectors?

I think it looks fine loco, but if I was going to repaint I’d go for green as I much preferred them in green, that’s the colour I remember seeing them in on the west cost mainline.
Re: Painting and Weathering Service
This loco has special meaning for the owner(or will have when renamed) and I have to agree with him that the paint used by Hornby is more of a muddy brown than crimson.
I have a green one in my collection and I have to admit that it looks pretty good in that colour.
No going back now.

No doubt about it - that's PINK.
If you don't do something about it your customer is going to be upset!! It's a Stanier loco - not Stroudly

At least it’s not fluorescent.
This is the latest iteration. Now the fun begins trying to get the black bits right.

Re: Painting and Weathering Service
Just purely as a point of interest nothing more, I put my City of Lancaster and Duchess of Sutherland (1980s ish) side by side to compare the too shads of maroon. Don't know if the lms maroon is supposed to be same as the br version?
As I say, just a point of interest.

Is one maroon and the other crimson lake or are they the same and if not what was used when? End of question.

Re: Painting and Weathering Service
LMS crimson lake and BR maroon are different shades. But Hornby found another shade which seems to include mud brown.

Thought they were but colours on a model look nothing like the real thing. You almost need a 1/76th version of maroon. I always thought the Hornby version looked about right. Doesn’t want to be too bright on a model.
Is that the final colour on the loco?

On the one I am repainting, yes. Railmatch crimson lake.
I took that picture three times in different light - every one looked different!
This particular colour is an absolute bu##er - even on full size locks, I believe.
