Good morning, travelling around Uk by rail is good in theory but in practice can be a little daunting around the larger cities of London, Birmingham and Manchester with the train mainly running late and overcrowded and connection trains not waiting. Some parts you mentioned namely Cornwall (my favourite place in Uk) and the Lake District don’t have very good rail connection any more, so when you get there you would need a car to get around or expensive taxis. York is the easiest in my opinion to get around and so much to see, and as good rail connections.
I would invest in the lonely planet book of Uk, well worth it for the little hidden gems.
Good luck roger o.
