LC&DR is right about the pink ballast. Here in North East Essex it's a very pleasant delicate shade of pink. It has to be seen to be believed.

I seem to recall from another forum that pumice can be purchased in a garden centre and used. (Bonsai, hydroponics, general surface dressing)

It’s lightweight, cheap, easily broken down with a hammer, washable to remove dust through a sieve and glueable with pva glue.

I might give it try when I get to that stage of build.

Just buy a bag of ballast. Goes a long way.
