Seaforth, Merseyside. In that triangle area. X marks the spot.
Opposite was all open at the time, had been a greyhound stadium.
You could pay more for a house but you couldn't say they were unaffordable, you just had to remove the toffee from your nose. My mortgage was less than council rent.

By the mid-seventies house prices in the south were starting to rise at an incredible rate. I paid £6250 for a three bedroomed semi in 1971 and sold it in 1976 for double the price - paid £25K for the next house - and I'm still in it! :(

Mum and Dad purchased the house they were renting in North London for £2000 in1958. It was a large terraced Victorian house. Those terraced houses are now selling for over a million. Pity Mum and Dad are not with us now they would have loved to be millionaires.

Your right Puddles - I was born in North London (Muswell Hill) and we lived in a rented flat for a number of years before my parents bought their first house in Friern Barnet. I occasionally go onto Google Earth/Streetwise and look where I used to live and check out roads I knew well. As you say they were /are big houses and cost a fortune. Those were the days. BB

Similar story from me, we lived in Stroud Green, not so far from Muswell Hill. Our family were renting half of one of those large Victorian houses in the early fifties when next door came up for sale. My single uncle who lived with us bought it in his own name (big mistake mum and dad!). He paid around £850 for it and sold it for many thousands (never found out exactly how many) in the late eighties. The buyer was a developer who I believe converted it to apartments. Got to be worth over a tidy sum today.

The area used to be called Hornsey where I lived, that was before it was amalgamated with Tottenham, Wood Green and Harringay then renamed Harringey. Crouch End just along from Muswell Hill is so posh now the rich people owning all those expensive houses call it Croosh Ond. :D
