Intrigued by what The Sligo Rover wrote about there being a railway on Jersey, I just had to look up details about it. It turns out that Jersey had not just one, but two, railways, although both now closed and long gone.
  • Jersey railway existed from 1870 to 1936
Jersey Eastern Railway from 1873 to 1929
I also discovered that there used to be a railway on Guernsey that I'd not heard of before, and I thought I knew quite a bit about the Channel Islands!
  • Guernsey Railway, 1892 to 1934
So I was on the right lines with my assertion about the Alderney Railway but I will have to amend the wording to say that the Alderney Railway is "the only working railway" in the Channel Islands. There remains a standard gauge railway at the Pallot Heritage Steam Museum in Jersey, but it purpose is only to provide pleasure rides and isn't an actual transport link. I thought that the Alderney train was only for pleasure rides too so why that one qualifies as a working railway, whereas the Jersey one doesn't, I have no idea.

Thank you Sligo River, for filling that hole in my railway knowledge. It was interesting to investigate!

Welcome. Another beginner N gauge modeller here. I tend to make it up as I go along but so far it's all worked out :)

Thanks for your messages. I'm finding that I'm making it up as I go along at the moment too, but I do have a picture in my head of what I'm aiming for so hoping it works out.

I finally made a start on Sunday as well. Not much to show for it so far, but at least it's moved on from "pencil and paper" to "wood and saw"!
