Thanks for the comments Chops and cheshire lines. There is an apple green (LNER) Flying Scotsman lurking somewhere in the cupboard along with a garter blue Mallard - again, at the time, essential models for the collector. Most of my purchases over the last few years have been BR Southern loco's. BB

At Post 286 I showed my "new" field, and said I would add some animals - horses. This has now been done, and an old trackside shed has been cannibalised into a shelter. I found a Langleys Models water trough on ebay. As the picture shows the water trough is empty.
I had a length of trough shaped plastic strip which I blocked off the ends and filled one end with PVA and the other end with DeLuxe Glazing Glue - both, as expected, have dried crystal clear -water? I think the inside of the trough needs a colour - it will be hardly noticeable, but I know it needs to look authentic - so what colour should the inside of the trough be - brown/black? The trough also needs weathering.

Greeny brown should be OK Barry. Or perhaps even browny green.

Hi Brian - I've been looking at water troughs under Google Images (there are lots!), and the water colour varies from clear to muddy. I'll have a play.

There is a trough in a field where we occasionally walk the dog that is a grubby silver galvanised colour on the outside and green on the inside but the water is clear as a bell.

My youngest son bought a wrought iron water trough from a house reclamation site. It was loaded by crane into the back of my son's Land Rover 110 - when he got home, the trough was to heavy to lift out of the 110 - that was five years ago - it's still there!!

Nice touch having one of the horses with a coat on.
As an aside, driving home from Whitby today we saw a horse tethered in the middle of a roundabout near Thirsk.
Would make an interesting cameo!

I expect Barry made the coat with his micro sewing machine

Barry,
As both banker and unpaid groom to my daughters two horses I can confirm that the trough will be thoroughly “manky” and the ground around it perpetually muddy......The area around any gate or feeding area will also be well trodden and muddy.
I sometime lie awake at night dreaming about the huge layout I could have if it wasn’t for horses and the old 7.5ton Horsebox - LOL
Cheers - Richard
Ps - when recently modelling my cottage scene on Montgreenan, I made a small paddock and wanted to place an Ivor Williams horse trailer in the adjacent field, but despite searching far and wide I could not find such an item in 00 scale.

Thanks for that first hand information Richard - I'll get the manky/muddy paint pot out. Barry
