His youtube earnings are more than enough to pay for the locos.
Thats interesting. How does he or anyone else make money from YouTube videos? No adverts that I can see and no donation requests.
Google/YouTube will basically pay Sam x amount per view, as he has got monetisation switched on. I believe He'll get something for the number of subscribers he has also.
Google/YouTube recoup this payment by charging advertisers to display adverts.
As a side note, I don't think he is getting directly paid by hornby or others as he would have to mention this on his videos. He has been given things in the past and he makes it very clear when this happens.

Correct Stese, 100,000 subs mark which he has passed will increase his payment.

It’s the carpet running that makes me think his views are not worth listening to.
He has addressed that more than once in his videos and accepts it is not 'proper' practice.

I dip in very occasionally to see if it has improved.
I used to be a regular viewer of his, but now I am a lot more selective. If he is reviewing something I might be interested in I will give it a look.
Someone I have discovered recently that I really enjoy is Mojave Model Railroad, refreshingly different!

I’ve found a few of his videos informative, but he does seem to pad them out a bit. He certainly has a serious amount of kit. I wonder if he’s bought it or is it stuff that shops and manufacturers have bunged him.

If he is to be believed, he very rarely gets free stuff from manufacturers. I suspect he must have a day job as he doesn't seem to make that much from his channel.

To make "serious" money from YouTube you need a lot of subscribers. I watch Tim Burton (Shmee 150) - he has 2.3m subscribers. His personal car collection must now be worth close on £2m - and he appears to add to it on a fairly regular basis.
