All will be revealed regarding fixing (waiting for the postman again).

I saw them on a YouTube video - found them on eBay around £1 each. I found today that you treat them like a normal LED. Rated for 3v, I had this one hooked up to an adjustable DC supply. They switch on at 2.5v and at 3v they sear your eyeballs!
My initial trial shows that a resistor (possibly 330R?) knocks the brightness back nicely and allows almost infinite adjustment via the controller.

More to come idc.

They look about six inches long? Just a thought, but if you wanted the lighting spaced out along a loco shed roof, you could use black heat shrink (suitably spaced) or mask off where you want the light and paint the rest in matt black.

130mm Barry. Also available in 230mm and 330mm.
I like the idea of masking tape - don't know if they will be seen when mounted in the shed so it may be a detail too far, or maybe not.

I had no idea such a thing existed. I’ve just watched a YT video on them, they look amazing, just a bit of a bu@@ger to cut and solder in shorter lengths for the one in the video which was just over a meter. Look forward to seeing the results of your experiment. R-

Surprised anyone has managed to cut one of these or even tried for that matter!
I think short versions are available to repair light bulbs!!!!!!!
They could work well for coach lighting and very easy to hide away in the roof space.

Proof of concept trials for the striplights. I threaded the filament and resistor into a clear drinking straw which holds it straight.
The power is supplied by a web of brass rod in the roof of the engine shed - a bit of an ugly installation but I will go back to it tomorrow with some short lengths of heatshrink to imitate the gaps between the tubes.

They look very impressive - can you get one to flicker as though it needs replacing

The only ‘flickr’ is the one that hosts the photos. :D

They are somewhat overscale but give a good warm glow and are invisible from a normal viewing angle. The wiring under the board needs finishing off and then I can adjust the voltage to get a decent effect.
