I have just fitted a Hornby R8115 TTS Sound Decoder to my new Merchant Navy. Everything is inside the tender, so it is a very straightforward and easy job to do. There have been several comments made that the TTS speakers are ok, but the sound can be improved with an aftermarket speaker. The speaker that comes with the TTS kit is a 28mm round speaker and after removing the weight, it sits, facing down, in a circular cut-out in the tender chassis – so the Youchoos speaker I bought was really a direct replacement. Before refitting the tender body, I black tacked a small piece of plasticard over the top of the speaker, this kept all of the wires out of the way, and stops the decoder touching anything that might cause a short.
The other option was a very slim, rectangular speaker from Road & Rails (originally fitted in a Tablet) – this would just sit on top of the weight in the tender attached with a couple of strips of black tack.
All in all, an amazingly simple job, the hardest part was getting the handbrake shaft back into a hole in the tender chassis. I will try and get a “sound” video made over the weekend.
Picture shows the round speaker in place, with the optional flat/slim speaker sitting below the tender chassis.

Not to happy with the "chuff rate" - but the whistle is great - you can hear it down the road
I have not run this loco in yet so it's still a bit stiff.
Also this sound cost £25.00 - which when you consider what else it out there, I suppose it is not to bad. I need to play with it a bit more.

If it sounds as good as it looks, I know why you like it.

The 6.02pm local train from Manydown to Wykeham. It's a pity the lamp failed on the signal.
I'm thinking of adding sound to this loco.

Thanks Roger and Brian - I'm going through one of those spells where I don't know what to do next, but there are a number of things to be done. Barry
