Gets better and better! I have a shiny new Peckett on coal delivery duty in need of some serious weathering, what did you use?

Thank you gentlemen - much appreciated. I have to admit to outsourcing the Peckett weathering as I am not confident or have the facilities to weather a new loco. I used TMC outside Whitby as they are only 20 miles from me and have always given good service - nice people too.

Just as an experiment, I gave a spare M/N Class body that was lying around a coat of Humbrol Black Wash - it didn't look to bad when it had dried - a well used dirty body. Not sure whether I would risk a decent loco.

Sorry, should have added that the weathered Peckett looks just right in that scene.

I've been looking forward to your next posting; it just gets better, lovely, lovely modelling.

That girder bridge at the end makes it look as if it's hidden away in a cutting somewhere in a run-down part of town (just the impression I get). And the remains of the siding add very nicely to the effect. Nice one, Mick.

Thank you for your lovely comments everyone. The disused sleepers are a very recent addition. I was walking past our local railway line and saw a disused siding so I got the inspiration from that but I omitted the rails leaving just a few sleepers to imply that the engineering works used to be a busier place but is now struggling in a mostly forgotten part of town.

My layout with no name yet now has a name - Corburn Lane Sidings. It is a combination of where I live and my favourite holiday destination.

I have written a backstory/description thing to go with it.

It is a cold and damp winter’s day in 1959. Two neglected but worthy Pecketts, a W4 0-4-0 and a B2 0-6-0 shunt the yard at Corburn Lane Sidings.

Corburn Engineering and Wagon Works is located in an almost forgotten part of the small town of Corburn. The firm was established in the late 1800s and soon became specialists in wagon repair work and repainting. Now however, work is harder to find, especially since British Railways started doing more work in-house and outsourcing some jobs to larger companies. Thus, Corburn Engineering and Wagon Works are struggling to survive. Facilities remain quite ‘olde-worlds’ and the whole place is now run on a shoe string. The loco shed and wagon repair shop are unlikely to see a lick of paint in the near future, whilst no-one can even remember from where the water tank that feeds the steam locos was sourced. Occasionally, a wagon needing repair is hauled into a siding by one of those ‘new-fangled’ diesel shunters, whilst the old boys of the firm shake their heads with contempt. “They’ll not catch on,” you can hear them mutter. “Unreliable modern rubbish!” However, ominously, a small diesel fuel tank has recently been installed by the side of the loco shed. A premonition of things to come perhaps and a nod to modernity?

Some employees busy themselves with a range of jobs, thinking about workmates who have recently left. Where are the booming 1950s they were promised - certainly not in this small corner of the country.

Meanwhile, the yard dog sits watching a cat which has strayed away from its usual haunts. The only thing he worries about is when it’s lunch time.

(Just a few more details and then my first micro-ish layout is finished. Are they ever?)

Thanks WTD and BB. Glad I’ve achieved a chilly look as that was my aim from the start as I wanted to get away from the summer day that is quite often modelled - not that there is anything wrong with that - I’ve been there and just fancied a change. A few details to finish including people/ animals then I’ll need to buy some stock and perhaps have a go at some serious weathering/destruction so that old wagons enter and refurbished ones exit.
