Thanks for the tips Steve - I have cut the plaster casts as you suggested and hopefully that will improve things. When it comes to the plaster bandage, it might be worth putting a nail through the foam into the baseboard to hold it in place while the bandage dries.

I have been watching Lukes Aps - he's a war-gamer but builds some very good hills/scenery - certainly worth looking at, and he makes it appear very easy to get a good result - this is one of three videos where he shows how to go that extra mile to get a fantastic end result.

I solved my curling end by cutting it back and using some old ‘wood’ panels as an retaining wall. All a bit ugly at the moment but it will get better.

The scaled down cliffs look better.

Thanks Steve - I think I'm going for a grey finish on the cliff face (in the end I did not
). The two ends actually come off - I stuck a length 10mm dowel into the two ends, and then pushed the dowels into the main hillside. Hopefully the weight of the plaster bandage will keep them flat on the base board. I can lift the whole lot of the layout easily - I think the bandaging might be done in the garage.

That's the best location for domestic harmony Barry.
Did mine in the shed but managed to ruin the memsahib's washing up bowl in the process - I continue to suffer the repercussions of that.
Remember my previous advice to thin the paint sufficiently or it will be too dark for your location.

Barry, you may already have seen this but there are some useful tips for building cliffs in this video from Luke Towan.
