Yes I do. When I rebuilt the workshop I included a high volume bathroom extractor - the inlet is directly above the painting area (built into the shelf) and vents straight out of the shed wall. Plus plenty of windows to open.

Hi Steve, could you please quote for weathering a green boxed Lima class 40 to the same outcome as your previous green 40 back in March on this thread? I also would like the number changed from D335 to D336.

Lots of new paints have been delivered so I’m experimenting with some new rust effects.

On the left, chipping medium - apply rusty paint, cover in chipping fluid (it’s a bu**er to spray) then spray the top coat. Allow to dry then brush on water and chip the paint with a stiff paint brush.
On the right, masking fluid - dab on to rusty paint with a small sponge then apply top coat. When dry, rub it off with your finger.
Either technique should work to recreate that characteristic rusty patch often seen on smokeboxes but they need to be used more delicately than I did on these test sheets.

Also a hint of my next project on the bench. Renumbering and some weathering to be done. Had to order some more numbers - thought I had some in the drawer but I was wrong (as I often am).

While I’m waiting for the new number Transfers’s to arrive, I started some preparation work on this class 40. I hadn’t appreciated how far factory applied lettering and badging had progressed in recent years so now I’ve ordered some BR crests to replace the cage smudges that Lima applied.
The old numbers and crests have either been removed or painted over ready for a touch of gloss varnish to help the new transfers stick.

I’m looking for a very specific effect for those characteristic rust patches seen on some smokeboxes so a few more quick experiments today.
This one was using hairspray rather than chipping medium. Turns out this may be the one I’m after, much more controllable and smaller chips as a result. It would work well on ore wagons or similar steel wagons.

Postal deliveries (in general) seem to have been a bit slow this week - the correct facing BR crests only arrived today instead of Tuesday as anticipated.
But never mind, they have now been added to the model along with the new numbers and overhead electric flashes along with a sealing coat of satin varnish. A few small details have been picked out and some fuzzy edges to the original Lima paint have been corrected.
Ready for some weathering treatment to start tomorrow.
The tray on the bench gives an idea of how many different paints go into a project such as this.
