Once the war starts I believe that most, if not all, engines were painted black. Time to get the paint can out!

Four of them have been painted black --- and that's it.

It depends. Black paint may not have been available. There was a war on.

On the layout war hasn't started yet, but things are beginning to build up. Around 98% of Governments' know well in advance they could and will be plunged in to battle.
The machine factories at Sovereign Street have changed production to making weapons. Town Tailors have a large order to make Military Uniforms. Military Personnel have been recalled from leave.
The four black engines are -- three GWR green engines I acquired reasonably cheap (and lovely runners). They have been repainted Kirkstall & East Seacroft Railway black and altered slightly to look a little different from GWR. The fourth black engine is a 0.6.0 'Terrier' in K&ESR black.
The other two Railway Companies (Calder Railway and Leeds, Scarcroft & Wetherby Railway) engines are still in their Company colours.
I would love the Oxford Rail 'Gladiator' Railgun. I am working out a reason to buy it with the approval of 'Household Authorities'.
