Unable to purchase the Oxford Railgun at present, Kirkstall Forge workshops have been hard at work. Here are a couple of photographs of what will become K F 1 Railgun.

Obviously there is still a lot to be done before it is finished, but it has done 'a few laps' without any problems.

Sshhhhh! It's to confuse the enemy. They think it costs one shilling and sixpence.

I gave it a few laps on the layout to make sure it clears everything. Now I can add other bits and pieces to it. Then a coat of paint etc.

Our youngest grandson is staying at our house tonight.

He wanted to run 'the big green engine with the gun'. A great chance to see the gun doing the circuit.

The wagon was never used. (I was thinking of selling it.) The 'bits and bobs' to make the gun etc. were from the 'scrap box'. The cost? About £7.00 plus the wagon. I do know it is a 'heavy beast' and a great challenge to build.

Truly, I am blown out of the water by this piece. The K F 1 Railgun rather defies a Google
Search; if you were gunning for a unique piece, then you really hit the target with this
one. Fabulous!

I am certain that the mesmerizing canal in the back ground shall be well defended.
The ducks and swans shall trouble the traffic below no more with their arial deposits.

A little history as to why I built the railgun.

As early as March 1912 an article is mentioned, in the North Eastern Magazine, of a possible invasion on the Yorkshire coast if a war was declared. The article mentions the North Eastern Railway to prepare for such an eventuality.

On 30th August 1914 (owing to the threat on the East Coast) Gateshead Works had the task to build a 54 ton trolley wagon asap. On that trolley was to be a 9.2inch naval and used for coastal defence.

On 16th December 1914 Whitby, Scarborough and the Hartlepools (Hartlepool and West Hartlepool) were bombarded by German warships.

Although there was no invasion, the threat was always possible.

Back to the model. Kirkstall Forge were also given the task to build a railgun to be used also on protecting the East Coast. The K F 1 is the result. I just have to give it a name.
