Well it's heading for 39C today with a forecast afternoon change. Last night was very humid but one of those nasty humid nights which cool in the early hours and leave you feeling both cold and very clammy. A few bush fires have broken out up the country in the last few days and the wind isn't helping the efforts to control them. However Tasmania is copping it worst. In the last 10 years it seems that each state in turn has been copping bad bush fire summers with many people being killed. The 7th of February will be the tenth anniversary of the Black Saturday bush fires in my state of Victoria when the temperature reached 45 degrees after three consecutive days of over 40 degree temperatures and 180 people were killed.

So far touch wood this summer hasn't been that bad.
We had bad conditions in the preceding summers of 2007 and 2008. In 2007 I remember flying back from a committee meeting in Canberra to Melbourne (I was on a federal government advisory committee) and looking out the plane windows to the east the whole of eastern Victoria was under this massive wall of brown dark grey smoke while to the west it was clear.
