I bought this some 15+ years ago and it has been running perfectly ever since, until this week when it will not move.
Have stripped it down to the two half chassis from the body and found nothing untoward - I must say for the first time in the above period.
Linkage is ok, brushes c2mm and appear in working order. Tried a 9v battery across the wheels - dead. Tried two engines on the same track and the other one isn't shorted out. Tried a mini meter across the brush head terminal posts and got a "flicker", but I don't really know what I am doing with this instrument.

So can these motors simply pack up, just like that?

Any remedial suggestions will be most welcome.

Mod Note: Topic moved from the Welcome area to OO 4mm area.

I have had look around and I cant find a service sheet for it so don't know what I am looking at. I would suggest that if you have checked everything out and can't find a fault that you send it away to somebody like Peter Spares and let him fix it he is normally reasonable I think. Give him a ring first he will give an idea of cost. Last I heard he charged £15 plus post for a service. Maybe it needs new motor or perhaps it is just dirt on contacts wheels. ect; I would give it good clean before doing anything. Make sure all the wheels and pick ups are clean and contacting properly.

If after checking everything out it still is giving problems may I suggest something. I just had look at Hattons and they have about 7 in there second hand section. The prices range from £28 up to £35 and that suggests to me that the mainline version is not the most reliable model. The Hornby one is a better buy but you will have to pay more for it.
All that aside I hope you manage to sort it out. ............John

Hello folks, I am back, and thanks for your responses.
Having pondered a little further, I looked up on Youtube that chap who did a Mainline service video. What I had forgotten was that the side cover to the commutator had to come off to clean the armature and inner housing. For those of you who can remember my housing was thick black soot, like from our house chimneys, in miniature.
Having confessed earlier to not looking at the innards previously (15 years) I suppose the condition was not surprising. It went well and is not similar to all my other locos.
All's well that ends well, and thanks a lot.
