I am now ready to start chipping a number of older Locos to DCC and have been advised to wire in a 8 pin to connect with the decoder Is there a video on the net and is this good advice rather than hard wiring because of upgrading.

With my locos I just hard wired them in. Though that was before most decoders had plugs.

An 8-pin socket only works obviously for an 8-pin decoder. There are also 4-pin, 6-pin, even 7-pin and variants of 21-pin decoders to consider, not to mention the newer Plux variant sockets.

with one loco that didn't have any provision for a decoder I hard wired a 8 pin decoder plug socket in the tender first, should any problems arise with the decoder it's then quick to change.

Only fit a socket if there is room for it. Otherwise direct (Hard) wire it.

Thanks for the replies, starting with a Hornby class 29 and a Hornby decoder. Nobody move or the Scottish loco gets it.
