North Wales is a great place for railways too.

Rhyl has one of the oldest miniature pleasure lines round Marine Lake. Llandudno has a cable tram which climbs to the top of the Great Orme. The Welsh Highland Railway has a new station in Caernarfon where trains depart for Porthmadog. Llanberis has two railways, one runs alongside Lake Padarn and the other climbs to the top of Snowdon, Porthmadog has three railways, the Welsh Highland Railway, the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway and the Ffestiniog Railway.

A bit further south there is the Llangollen Railway from Llangollen to Corwen, which is a Standard Gauge GWR line. At Fairbourne is another miniature line, this time on the sea shore. Alongside Lake Bala is another narrow gauge line. There is a railway Centre at Oswestry, with another at Llyn Clys.

At Machynllech there is another narrow gauge heritage centre. The Talyllyn Railway starts from Towyn, the very first heritage railway opened in 1950,
From Aberystwyth is the Vale of Rheidol line which was the last steam worked line owned by BR.

There are many other places of railway interest, including mines and quarries which can still reveal traces of old railway activity.

All in all North Wales has a great deal to interest a railway enthusiast, and then there is the scenery! One of my most favourite places!

Porthmadog actually has four railways... If you also count the main line... It is quite a place, and if anyone is going to North Wales, I always say to visit Porthmadog. Few have ever come away dissapointed.
It also has a model shop which sells model railways, and I believe I saw model railways on sale at the Festiniog Railway station?

My wife and I recently stayed in a well-known small North Wales town. She is from South Wales and speaks the lingo. That evening we went to one of the local pubs and it is true to say that if there had been a piano player he would have stopped playing as we walked in!!

I would imagine it would be the same in most pubs in Wales if one avoids the large towns and cities. I rarely go in pubs. I did go in one last weekend. My brother and his wife had a voucher for a carvery, and we really had some lovely food there. It is good value. I was a little on edge as I am a person who prefers to buy food and sit somewhere quiet outdoors to eat it, even if it is raining.... but this type of food needs to be eaten indoors I guess because of the plates etc. It was lovely food though. Having never been to a carvery before, it is quite tempting to go again... I can choose a bit of everything that I like and not pick what I am less then keen on. Ideal.

Ooh. I had this meal in a town in South Wales.

The Abercrave Inn in Abercrave (Abercraf) used to be the best place to eat for miles MG and I think you live not to far from there I understand. We lived about 3 miles from there. We went there every month. Not cheap though. ;)

Is about 45 to 50 miles from here at a guess as the roads go. Probably closer in a straight line.
