Track crossing roadway

In the two pictures, you can see what looks like a extra piece of track, was this just to contain the tarmac ?

Similar rails were used in docks and industrial premises, to permit road vehicles to cross lines of rails without bumping. Where points were embedded in the roadway the hand lever was enclosed in a metal box which laid flat flush with the road.

On the other hand tramways which run along streets have a special rail section where the head which is wider than normal has a groove to accommodate the flanges of tramcars
