Probably one of the best TV programs on over the festive period, Monday 30th December to be accurate.
It was titled "World's Most Scenic Railway Journey: Minute By Minute" and it covered the entire journey from Fort William to Mallaig in Scotland. Using several fixed cameras including the footplate it follows the journey through what must be one of the most stunning country in the British Isles. After the beginning build up and the journey begins there is virtually no dialogue but just the wonderful sound of the Black Five as it huffs and puffs it's way pulling seven slam door maroon coaches through the beautiful scenery. They picked one of those rare days north of the border when the sun was shining without a drop of rain or mist in sight so the view goes on forever. It was on channel 5HD so if you missed it look out for it on catch up. Well worth a watch.

It was wonderful wasn’t it. Somebody on another forum was really annoyed because it didn’t show lots of shots of the loco. I said the secret was in the title.

I'm jealous! Was the weather that good? We lived in North Scotland for eleven years and I dont remember many days like that. If I booked on that trip it would probably p down the whole journey. We got free tickets for the London Eye soon after it opened and couldn't see a ***** thing, it poured down!

It was a beautiful day and we sat on a crate at Mallaig watching a seal swimming in the harbour eating fish and chips, we were eating the fish and chips not the seal.


Sorry that’s not what you wanted to hear. It was pouring with rain, zero visibility, I broke my leg and my wife fell in the harbour.

As a resident of Scotland, I can confirm that beautiful days do exist from time to time - the difficult part is predicting when and where !......... the key thing to remember is that we often get all the seasons in the one day, and it is this that catches out many who set out on the mountains on a sunny day in casual attire and then have to be rescued in white-out conditions near the summit, and that is in July

There seem to have been two similar programmes over the Christmas period, one with interior shots in the carriages and less 'drone' shots the other vice versa. Same loco though, but one seemed to be high summer and the other autumnal. One was on Channel 5 but I cannot remember which Channel showed the other one, it may have been Quest.
