I got a couple of sleepers for the garden one of which needed to be cut to fit. When that was done I saw it was a lovely red colour and I was wondering what type of wood this one was made from? This sleeper was 8’ long and very, very heavy. Any ideas? R-

Hi, i think it could be "JARRAH" i think we used similar coloured sleepers on the SVR P-way in the 1980s

The colour is right for Jarrah. No idea where this one was used. It was purchased about 20 years ago from Bradfords [or similar] and came into my possession about 2 weeks ago. R-

Our local heritage railway asks for sponsorship of sleepers at £80 a pop. Walking along the line doing the sums in my head was a revelation about the cost of keeping these railways going.
