Level crossing

This may be a silly question, but can a level crossing be put on a curved section of the track and in the real World does this 
happen?

Peco do curved single track level crossings in diferent radius. Serch peco curved level crossing.

Yes. Real world railways don't use tight curves as per Peco and Hornby track though.
So you are allowed to use 'Modellers Licence' to make things fit and still appear correct.

A bit of a late reply... But...
Level crossings can be all sorts of curved and skewed angles - even when gated rather than barriers.
Neither gates nor barriers have to be parallel to the track nor at right angles to the road approaches. Barriers in particular can be set quite far back away from the track - and not unusually one end is near normal space from the track while the other is a greater distance - this tends to square them up to the road approach. The significant thing is that in almost all cases they completely shut the road approaches and usually close of the track when open. In one position or the other gates sometimes overlap each other.
