Newby N Gauge train set?

As a newby I am considering buying either a Kato M1/M2 N gauge track set which comes with a controller. I like the idea of adding point switches to the side of it. Anyway, is it better to just buy the track, then buy trains etc., or buy a set? Another question is, if I get the track set will other N gauge train manufacturers run on it? The reason I ask is that I like the idea of the Kato track but would like a British train to go with it. I don't really want to simply watch a train set whizzing around the track, to me that is almost as boring as watching F1 racing (sorry F1 fans). If other trains that Kato will run on the track can anyone recommend maybe a shunter? Some sound would be nice as well. presumably DCC is the way to go (although I am not quite sure what DCC does yet but will read up on it.
Sorry if all of this is a bit garbled but I do not intend buying anything until I at least have. a vague idea as to what I want and need.
Thanks
Brian

Any N gauge train should run on Kato track - the one issue I had was with the old style Farish 0-6-0 locos which had the pick up contact strips quite low on the back of the wheel which meant on the Kato No.4 points they either noticeably slowed or stopped . The problem was resolved by filing back the check rails - the wheel flange plus pick up was getting jammed in the gap between the running rail and the check rail.

If your going to venture into Dcc and Sound the above set is only DC, so you need to check all options before spending your cash, and not getting what you need. All modern makes of n gauge locos and rolling stock will run on Kato track.

Thanks a lot gents. Probably a daft question but what models (manufacturers) are reliable as well as being of good detail. I suppose it’s like asking how long is a piece of string. Some reviews say that the splotto steam train by Hornways is excellent and others say c**p. Anyway, any advice is always welcome.
Cheers

There is no single manufacture that makes the best (UK) models. Some from Hornby are better than some from Bachmann etc. etc. Generally speaking the most recent models are the most accurately modelled.

In N gauge the big players in the UK are Bachmann as Graham Farish and Dapol. Hornby have no N gauge involvment other than a Brighton Belle under the Arnold label which is otherwise a non UK range.
