Coal mine

#1

Post by Bandit Mick »

A little advice please. I want to model a coal mine or part of one. I work in OO and wondered if anyone could suggest a kit as a starting point. I don’t mind some scratch building but am looking for the main structures in kit form. It needs to be a mine found in the UK so something too European would perhaps not fit the bill.
Thank you.

I hear your point about "too European" but you might want to check out the Faller range. I built a small part working diorama for my previous layout and a small vid of it can be found on YouTube -search for Eastfield Colliery. I still have it and it's looking for a new home :D

You might also look at the Walthers range. Again these American kits are HO but really nice to make up. I have several on my current layout.

Have a quick look on ebay - search "Coal mine pit head" - a few options available.

Thank you both for your replies. A lovely picture TWD - it’s what I imagine I need.

A great vid TWD - a useful kit list too - just what I needed to help me.

What about the Builder plus BP0082 pithead buildings if you want a more British look.

Bachmann Scenecraft in OO do a range of mine buildings and a winch tower/building. https://www.gaugemasterretail.com/magen ... nn+44-0075

Full current Scenecraft range here https://www.bachmann.co.uk/category/mod ... ngs?page=1

Hornby also produced one in their OO Skaledale range item R8774 now discontinued, but second-hand ones pop up occasionally on web sales sites like eBay or Hattons pre owned. Hattons have one currently at £20 https://www.hattons.co.uk/906249/hornby ... tockdetail

Thank you for your suggestions everyone. I have priced up all the parts I would need for a mine and unless I can buy second hand the bill would be rather hefty. I think I’ve decided to go for a Walthers granite/quarry type building instead and kit bash/add bits to make it more UK like. I can also set part of it quite easily into the hillside I plan to build and have it nearer the front of my board so that despite being HO it will hopefully have more presence.

I saw them and jumped on them. Fabulous collection, they will eventually take a place of prominence on Henley. Oh. :( Henley did not mine coal. Or much else. :? Please refrain from mentioning this to my American counterparts. Thank you for the alert, Brian. They are perfect.
