Hi everyone, and thanks for the add, just getting back into railway modelling again after many years away, grandsons like trains so a good reason to get back into it. Things have changed a bit since I was a lad.
So be prepared for lots of questions.

Welcome FattishBoy - You've joined a great forum - any questions just ask away. Note: The grandsons like trains excuse for getting a model railway yourself is the regular excuse - you'll have to do better than that!

Aye your right, I must confess there is a layout in the loft been gathering dust for more years than I care to remember grand kids dont even know about it.
But I need to get some advice the track is Hornby system 6 mostly steel with some nickel silver. Just wondering if I should clean it up or start again from scratch.

Welcome to the forum.
It depends how bad the old track is. If it's pitted with rust, I'd just bin it or save it for static display models or disused sidings.

Start from scratch - modern track is much much better and you will be able to create a layout that isn't in danger of having to have track ripped up because it has deteriorated.

Cleaning and maintiaining the steel rails will take some work, but may be the best option in the short term. It will depend on the system you're intending to use. If you're DC then investment in new track may not be needed. If you're DCC or intend to go DCC (digital) it may be that investment in new track is wise.
Also, if your rolling stock and locos pre-date system 6 (which is the current standard still - aka code 100) then you may find points a problem.
