NRM Disappointment

Whilst in York this week, to primarily see “The Proclaimers” perform at the Barbican ( can’t beat a bit of tribal chanting over the border) and to attend a business mtg in Leeds, Mrs Hound Dog went on a tour at York Minister whilst I went to the NRM, where I especially wanted to see my first Western Hydraulic in the flesh.
You can imagine my disappointment when I was unable to find “Western Fusilier” in the Great Hall and on enquiring, I was told that it had been moved outside and was not accessible to the public…… I managed to spy a cab end sticking out one of the sheds through a distant window, but that was as close as I got.
Overall I have to say I wasn’t massively impressed by the NRM and was pleased that I hadn’t followed through on a previous plan to come down on the train from Scotland for a day visit…… for sure it is free ( although £10 for the car park plus the obligatory donation) and yes the Mallard etc remains stunning , but lots of railway crockery, old seats and tickets etc is just not my thing.
On my way back from Leeds, I made a detour via Skipton to pick up a Class 08 shunter that I brought on-line a few days earlier from Clark Railworks……. What lovely people and most welcoming - on hindsight I wish I had left more time to browse their stock and chat with them……. I have no connection with them but have bought quite a few items over the last couple years and the service and product is outstanding.
Cheers Richard
Ps - I didn’t venture into York station as for me it will never be the same without the sight and sound of a Deltic at the end of one of the curved platforms.
