Email notifications

Email notifications of responses to my topics don't seem to be working for me. I think I've set notifications up correctly:
The only email I've ever received from the site is my initial membership approval.

Hi
Go to the bottom of the posts and look for the Spanner symbol. Click on this and uncheck the top item - Subscribe/unsubscribe. It should not have a tick if you want to receive notifications for that topic.
Next ensure the 'Notify Me' option at the bellow a text box when replying to a post is checked.

Surely that option should be ticked so that I am subscribed? That’s the current state of the threads that I want to be emailed of new responses to.

It does seem counter intuitive but that is probably the way the phpbb authors set it up. R-

PHPBB software is getting very dated now im afraid.

OK, setting “Notify me when a reply is posted” has the effect of subscribing me to the topic when I’d previous unsubscribed.
