I intend to use the DIY modules from MERG
https://www.merg.org.uk/ i will be controlling a max of 5 loco`s , 7 points and signals , would this way be the cheapest way to go ( I am quite useful with a soldering iron)
Cheers

The various modules are cheap but you need to be a member of MERG to obtain them. If you know a member they may be able to supply them for you but I suspect you will not be entitled to any support if anything goes wrong.

As a MERG member myself you will need to join MERG and then obtain the kits needed for your project. You will need to be able to solder components onto a PCB and some components, especially on the DCC controller, are surface mount items.
An alternative is perhaps to purchase a SPROG II or the more high powered SPROG 3 and use that with a PC running free to download JMRI
software. Link to SPROG

Thats great, but have you tried soldering SMD components? These really need solder paste to aid soldering, plus a pair of tweezers and of course a darn good magnifying lamp or Opto visor!
I would recommend, if you have naver used or soldered SMD components. to obtain a SMD Starter kit to test your skills, such as Kit 461 Gas Lamp Twinkler kit.
