Warehouse roof thingies

#1

Post by Bandit Mick »

Could someone please tell me what those little warehouse roofs are called - the ones built above the beam which sticks out of the building and is used to load into and out of the warehouse. Sorry to not use the correct terminology but when I googled it nothing came back - due I think to my poor terminology. As usual, I bet someone on here knows the answer! Many thanks everyone.

Probably just a loading bay/dock - I recall flour mills and old warehouses used to have them several floors up - sticking out the side of the building with a small pitched roof usually with a hoist next to the opening.

I suspect the words “crane” and “canopy” are probably in there somewhere. Most of the wool warehouses and mills had them and you can still see the remnants of the system on old warehouses and mills. The cable did not have a hook but what looked like two rake heads that were hooked into the bales for lifting. I worked for a transport company in my first summer job and often accompanied drivers with awkward loads and we delivered to one of these warehouses with the bales just hoicked up of the back of the flatbed. That does not help you with your query but at least a chance to reminisce.

I think the type of crane used was called a “beam crane”. Some were quite sophisticated in that the beam had like a trolley affair so that when a bale was hoisted up to the top it could be rolled into the building along the beam.

I would refer to them as either canopy or awning.

Looking up some roofing terms the correct term for anything projecting out of the main roof is called a Dormer and can be with or without a window. Most dormers do not project beyond either the roof edge or house wall, so the canopies over the hoist/crane should be called an extended dormer roof.

is a dormer always a v shape. if so, then perhaps they are canopies. I have a canopy in front of my door, and dormer over my porch. Just saying.

Thank you all very much for your help. I should really know the answer to my own question given that I worked in a woollen mill in the West Riding - I just turned up every day without giving thought to the name of the roof thingies!
