Model Railway Forum

I have been wondering for some time whether to put my layout on the forum particularly in view of the quality of the listed layouts, so i decided to bite the bullet.
Alkerton Road began life as an entertainment medium for the Grandchildren. Construction was/is in a number of stages.

Stage one, low enough for the children to see the trains without stools etc.

Stage two, the grandchildren grew out of playing trains and I decided to raise the height requiring a new leg/support system. The scenery and structures were redesigned.

Stage three, a new 9 road fiddle yard was built to replace the 5 road one. At this stage the layout was exhibited at local MREx.

Stage four, the operating team wanted the ability for shunting so two new boards were constructed and the fiddle yard received minor alterations.

Readers may have gathered the layout is a "roundy-roundy" chosen so we could watch trains go by.

The concept of the layout was to keep it simple and sizes to fit a Seat Leon.

Alkerton Road is a fictitious location somewhere between Birmingham and Bristol on the Midland and Western region main line. The layout is designed with a rural station to provide through running. The scenic boards are 12” (305.4mm in new money) wide. The intention of the layout is to show minimal uncluttered track as one would observe in the countryside. The station, Alkerton Road, has a passenger/parcels bay platform with small engine maintenance shed left over from bye-gone days. The station comprises of kit bashed and scratch built buildings. A small 5 road fiddle yard with automated points supplies the trains to the up and down lines. Automatic working signals are operated by the trains.
Running stock is a mix of steam and diesel depending on the era being run. Steam locos are a mix of WR (Mogul, Halls, Castles) and MR steamers are (Black 5, Jubilees, Patriots and Royal Scots). Diesel classes range from Class 24’s to 66’s. Green and Corporate Blue diesel run in the 60s to 80’s eras. Local services are provided by DMU’s with the occasional HST or voyager passing through. All locos are fitted with sound mostly from my sound library.
