WD Austerity Numbering.

Post by OOLee »

Evening all,

I'm hoping that someone maybe able to share some information about the WD austerity 2-8-0 loco numbering.
I would like to show one during wartime use which if I've read correctly would have it's numbering in the 7000's ? I'm assuming that the one's you see with numbers in the 9000's would be in post war use ? If this is correct would the tender have any logos on during war service like BR as most of the 9000's have this or would a wartime one be plain ? Any info would be gratefully received,

Many thanks, Lee.

Hi,

Yes, that's the 21st army loco, I have a couple of those.
I was wondering if the wartime black austerity locos would also have the 7000's numbering and tender logos?

Many thanks, Lee.

If you look on line there are pictures of plain tenders, WD and LMR.

Thank you for your replies Walkingthedog :D
I have done a little more research this evening and hopefully have a bit more insight of what I need to do for a war period austerity ( I think :? )

Cheers,Lee.

Hi all,

So, I've renumbered the 2-8-0 austerity to n⁰ 70832 which would put it in service from May 1944, this would be right around the time period of the layout.
As the loco I've got was numbered as post war and had the early BR tender logo this also had to be removed.
I have two of the 2-8-0's 21st army locos in green ( as shown in the picture above which walkingthedog replied ) which have the WD war department markings on the engine and tender but I'm struggling to find any pictures of the 2-8-0 in austerity wartime black with these markings on though :|
If anyone knows of any photos showing these markings or have any information regarding whether it would have them or not I'd be very grateful 👍🏻

Cheers,Lee.

This is the loco that I'm looking for information on regarding markings, to WD or not to WD, that is the question :?: 👍

This book should have all the information you need "Allied military locomotives of the Second World War" by Tourett R. £72.55 on Amazon.

Thank you once again for the information walkingthedog.
I've been buying a few books lately of the southern railway during WWII and railways in general during this period.
I've just been looking at the book that you recommended and have found a couple for sale on another marketplace site for a decent price so it looks like another book will be joining the collection soon :D 👍🏻

Cheers,Lee.
