So this year I changed my Hyundai Tucson car to an identical model, but a brand new facelift version. Insured with esure and the older car (22 plate) was £495 replacement new car is now £1080.20 for 10 months.

Today. Saga house and contents insurance renewal arrived. Last year £272.26. Renewal cost quote £713.20. Lets just say I'm no longer with Saga and have Tesco insurance for £310.50

So what on earth is going on with insurance this year?

I got clobbered last year, same car, same insurer, suspected it might be due to being over 70 now.
Change of insurers coming this year I think.

Changed my house and contents a couple of years ago and got it for about a third of what I had been paying

I was 76 when I took out the old cars insurance in September this year with esure but an upgrade of car to a new model and still Hybrid and a Tucson to the same spec is now vastly more expensive. They have got me by the proverbial short and etc it seems! :o

I have a regular 'courtship dance' for car and house insurance. Also the same with broadband/TV provider. With the latter I always seem to get more channels for a lower price - go figure.

I have been with the same company for my car for years, and this year much to my surprise the insurance went down. I have no idea why.

Yes me too, £198.65 compared with £232.20 last year (both with Budget Insurance). I was a very pleasant surprise!

I had been with the AA for car insurance for a number of years, and always found that when the renewal notice arrived, if I rang and said "I'm changing insurers" they always came up with a very attractive and acceptable figure. This year, they offered to reduce the new quote by about £12.00 and actually said "so you will be leaving us?" - which I did.
I have always found using Go Compare comes up with some attractive quotes, the trouble is most of the really low priced offers come from companies you have never heard of.

Don't worry about the company names too much, look to see who underwrites it and user reviews.
The other thing to watch with cheaper quotes, is windscreen cover. It used to be standard but now a few cheaper quotes don't include it.
Its a hefty bill for a new one on a lot of cars with sensors and cameras !

In the last few years my insurance has gone from a fairly consistent for several years circa £200 previous to 2019, climbing every year since, to around £450 this year.
My new to me car is a few insurance groups higher, but is also the first non new car (nearly 4 years old) I have had for a long time, and hence it value is a lot less than previous cars. I do sometimes feel they just pluck their prices from thin air !

I always do the compare sites and usually haggle the current insurer to match or better, but this year when I tried, i got an automated " if you are phoning for a better price, we have already given you our best price" message, so they didn't get my business ! At 57 years old with max no claims, no convictions etc, and in a relatively low risk area, I thought they might like to keep me on

I think part f the reason is my new to me car is a few groups higher as its a higher theft risk vehicle, but if I keep it in a locked garage, the insurance costs more than if it is parked in the driveway

Dreading my imminent renewal notice for the Kuga. But at least my Spitfire only costs £10 per month and no tax or MOT.
The Kuga is regularly rotated between two or three insurers although, as previous comments have shown, I think the insurance companies are getting wise to it. I think it was last year that I found alternative quotes were within £20 of my renewal amount.

We always get comparative quotes including themselves as new customers and ring our lot up (LV) telling them they say they will not give more favourable terms to new customers than old and we have had these quotes, etc. They have always come down on their renewal price.
