H&M Duette problem

#1

Post by wellwhynot »

My recently bought h&m Duette which is totally unmarked and looks like new ( I know it's not ) runs my two locos perfectly but gets pretty hot is this normal. never had one of these before so just asking. would it be a good idea to drill some ventilation holes in the case or leave it as it was made

No, is the short answer. Mine, get warm. Do you mean hot, or just warm to the touch.

I don't think my Duette got hot at all. Mine was the early version. Is yours the later version with the half wave and high/low switches?

I left my H&M Duette on over night last week and when I went in, in the morning it was only warm. Does not seem to have done it any harm leaving it on over night. I would expect any transformer to get warm when it is switched on. I have had other H&M controllers over the years and they don't normally get hot. Only warm far as I know. ................John

Do you know an electrician who can take a look? It maybe fine, but it is worth a check, just incase.
For safety reasons, check the 240v cable, especially where the rubber grommet is where the wire enters the case. They are very good controllers. Sometimes a short can cause excessive heat. However there is natural heat from the transformers windings. Should not normally be very hot though.
The best idea is to find an electrician to give it a quick check for safety.
