Opportunity too good to refuse

I have been asked by a friend of mine who is not short of a quid, to build him a layout in HO.. My friend came to Australia from Germany in the 50s but still has childhood memories of the Deutsche Bundersbahn. Without boasting I know a fair bit about railways in Britain especially the GWR LMS and Aus rail but I know nought about German rail.
So I am after a crash course in post war German rail. Wikipedia is too broad. Any good website recommendations

I don't know a lot myself so I will take a seat and watch. I know their steam locos were black with red chassis.

Sounds like a most interesting project. Is this friend going two rail or three? Seems to be a lot of information on Google. Caternary, diesel, steam or all 3?

Post war mixture of steam and diesel. I have always used Peco code 100 and 75. What is the marklin 3 rail like to use? Is there any advantage in using 3 rail with DCC?

Well, others might have a better view of the matter, but the 3 rail Marklin and the big pick up shoes on the locomotives make for a superior level of electrical conduction, and thus it would seem that DCC three rail would be more reliable, in terms of that alone. Not to mention that Marklin has a redoubtable reputation of quality, overall.
