Pushing a CMX

I run basically a steam layout. The only diesel I have is a class 42. With an incline, it hasn't the "omph" to push it up the incline. What is a good heavy diesel with grunt to push a CMX?

That really depends on the angle of your incline. Have you tried two locos?

As you have found the CMX is heavy and really needs double heading.

I use a Class 40 to pull my CMX cleaner, but i have no inclines.

I also have no inclines and I top-and-tail my CMX with two class 73s just like they do today with RHTT trains. Means I can reverse the train easily without any problems with derailing etc.

I use Heljan Bo-Bos - originally a 33 but now a dedicated 26 chassis which is radio controlled to cope with any real filth on the track in a hidden tunnel; having it dedicated to the track cleaning role meant it did not need to have all the rc stuff fitted neatly inside the chassis/ body shell.

Class 68 all wheel drive nice and heavy too, with pull or push it.
