If your not worried about US trains then I would recommend Kato Engines. You can buy them with sound factory installed; although, threy are not cheap but excellent quality.

I too have custom built platforms for my N Scale and I use 12/13 mm hieght for them. I don't know if that is prototypical or not as I built them to suit the carraiges and rolling stock I use. If there was a way of adding pictures here I could show you what I mean :) https://i.imgur.com/20JOPkc.jpg
