Hi Conner - welcome to the forum.

This is indeed an expensive hobby and you are making a good start by asking questions before committing yourself to any expenditure. Personally I would avoid the Select controller as although an upgrade has just been released it can only be carried out on a return to base [Hornby] option and in any event you will probably tire of it quite quickly. In addition it is supplied with a 1amp power supply which might not be enough if you want to run 3 or 4 locos simultaneously. The Gaugemaster versions are generally considered to be a much better option.

Ask any questions that you want, particularly where electricity is concerned, and we will do our best. There is a great resource here which will give you some insight to the world you are about to enter. Take small steps and don't scare yourself. We all started in the place you are now.
