In Mays issue of steam railway there were two photos which brought the railways of my era to life so I’ve copied them to share. What were your railway memories like.

There weren’t any prestige engines only dirty old engines covered in soot and oil and the carriages weren’t any better but I loved them all.

Much of my nostalgia centres on journeys I made by train, especially to places I had never been before.
The first time I went on holiday to the Lake District, we caught a train from Euston which was hauled by Patriot class "E. Tootal Broadhurst" to Penrith and then a 2-6-4 tank engine to Keswick. I don't think I sat down all the journey, but stood up looking out of the window all the way. We did the same journey again each year for a number of years, and then when I was in my teenage years I bought a return ticket to North Wales and a "Freedom of Wales" rover ticket, and staying in a B&B in Penmaenmawr travelled every day to as many of the narrow gauge lines as I could reach. The line from Bangor to Afon Wen was still open and I used this regularly in my expeditions.
The following year my brother and I travelled to the Isle of Man staying with my Dad's cousin in Douglas. I managed to travel all the 3 foot gauge railways to Ramsey, Peel, and Port Erin including the horse tram, and the electric trams as well. I walked the Groudle Glen railway which was derelict and badly overgrown.
Not having a good camera most of my recollections are memories.

I have finally started going through old photos from my parents house - it’s only taken ten years to make a start.
Came across these two. I know it’s about 1968 from the school blazer I’m wearing and I presume it’s the MHR as we were on holiday in Hampshire that year. But I genuinely cannot remember that part of the holiday itself.
