Which loco do I buy?

#1

Post by Bandit Mick »

Some suggestions please. I have funds to purchase a oo gauge loco for my under construction layout. Below are my requirements.
Shunting a private owner siding.
Short wheelbase required - I use insulfrog and code 100 - my tiny peckett runs no problem.
1950s will be portrayed so something which could have been acquired for a run down seen better days area.
All wheel pick ups would be best - just in case!
Something unusual but believable is acceptable.
Could change the era if a diesel shunter is used instead - could even combine steam and diesel if this would work (I don’t have a massive knowledge of prototypical workings).

Thanks for reading - hope someone comes up with something.

Is your "tiny Peckett" the 0-4-0SST or the 0-6-0ST - 0-4-0s and dead/insulfrog points do not really go well together, even if it runs okay initially the plastic frog on Peco points which I assume you are using does have a habit over time of rising up slightly. I would spend any monies you have at the moment changing the points for live/electrofrog ones

Thanks Mike. Yes I’m using insulfrog due to a prob with live frogs - for some reason every loco I have including longer wheelbase juddered over the live frogs. My main layout has been built with insulfrog 4 years ago and my 0-4-0 peckett still runs as sweet asa nut at barely crawling speed.

Add a track pin as close as possible to the centre of the points, that will prevent them rising up. Worked for me.

Alternative locos in terms of industrial locos would be

a) Hattons Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST https://hattons.co.uk/stocklist/siteres ... ld=barclay
b) Hornby Peckett B2 0-6-0ST (R3693-R3695, new versions to come R3576,R3577)
c) Hornby Sentinel 0-4-0 diesel (current model R3577 Oxfordshire Ironstone Co Graham)
d) Hornby Sentinel 4wD (current model R3576 Barrington Light Rly No.19)
e) Hornby Ruston & Hornby 4wD, which comes with a flat wagon which does not need to be run with it but if it is provides extra pick ups (currently available R3704)

I would concur with Mike's list above but would also add the following ex main line, some of which were sold to industries and light railways by railway companies when surplus.

LB&SCR A1 / A1X 0-6-0T by Hornby or Rails
SE&CR P 0-6-0T by Hattons
LSWR B4 by Hattons
L&YR 0-4-0ST by Hornby

The Hornby J94/WD type 0-6-0ST (R3466 etc.) was extremely common in industrial service especially in Collieries
LC&DR says South for Sunshine
